Software License Activation

Whatever the deployment — SaaS, desktop, on-premises, or a disconnected dark site — customers and prospects simply get on with using your software, SaaS, or hardware. That is why satisfaction stays high: activation gets out of the way. Here is every method, from online and identity-based activation to offline and Local License Server.

Online Activation

Three ways to activate online

For connected software, customers activate through their account, through their own identity provider, or with a traditional activation code. Each method resolves entitlements from the same control plane so there is one source of truth for what every customer can use.

Account-based licensing

Customers activate by signing in — there are no keys to distribute. The platform resolves their entitlements from their verified account and allocates a seat automatically.

Identity provider & SSO

End customers that run their own identity solution sign in through their provider — Okta, Azure AD, Auth0, Google, or any OpenID-based provider — and the platform activates their assigned licenses automatically.

Activation codes

Traditional activation codes suit simple deployments, trials, and distributed teams. A user enters a code when launching the software and a seat is allocated instantly.

Offline & Dark Sites

Activate without a connection

Plenty of software runs in secure locations with no internet at all. For these disconnected and air-gapped dark sites — common in defense, government, and manufacturing — activation never has to touch the cloud directly.

Offline activation

Software on machines with no internet — in secure locations and dark sites — activates through a two-way token exchange. The offline machine generates an activation request, an alternate connected device relays it, and a signed unlock certificate is returned and applied.

Local License Server

For dark sites, a Local License Server runs inside the customer network. Installed software activates and is enforced by communicating with the server over the local network — fully disconnected from the cloud, with binding, concurrency, and full auditability.

Self-service End-User Portal

Customers perform offline activations and deactivations themselves through the brandable End-User Portal — generating and applying the tokens to activate a device or release a seat, with no support ticket required.

Instant Access

From order to access in seconds

For SaaS, web, and on-premise apps alike, orders from ecommerce, CRM, or sales-led procurement trigger instant entitlement creation — customers and prospects get access within seconds, including trials and POCs, with no manual provisioning. For purchases, that means accelerated quote-to-cash.

Ecommerce & sales-led

Self-service checkout and procurement-led B2B deals both flow into the same entitlement creation — no separate path to build or maintain.

Trials & POCs

Trials and proofs of concept activate instantly, so prospects evaluate the real product within seconds rather than waiting on manual setup.

Accelerated quote-to-cash

When a purchase closes, access follows immediately — collapsing the gap between the order and recognized revenue.

End-User Portal

Customers manage their own licenses

The End-User Portal is a brandable, self-service web app where customers — and their procurement contacts — see and manage everything they have purchased, including offline activations and deactivations, without contacting support.

View every license

Customers and their procurement contacts see every license they have purchased in one brandable, self-service web app.

Distribute entitlements

Allocate purchased entitlements to the departments and staff who need them, and monitor usage against limits.

Self-service activation

Perform online and offline activations and deactivations — and buy upgrades — without ever contacting support.

Deactivation

Deactivation is as easy as activation

Activation is only half the lifecycle. Being able to deactivate just as easily is what lets customers move machines, what gives you a commercial lever with late payers, and what stops access — and cost — from quietly leaking away.

Move a license between machines

Deactivation is logical for on-prem software as well as SaaS, and easy to self-manage. A customer moving software to another machine deactivates it on the first — releasing the seat — and reactivates on the second, swiftly.

The 'big red button'

When an account is late paying, deactivating their entitlements halts access to the product. Cutting off access very often results in rapid payment of outstanding invoices — a far more effective lever than chasing invoices manually.

Stop access leaking

Trials and legacy accounts that are never deactivated leave a trail of redundant access — leaking cost and leaving the door open for non-payers to keep using your platform. Enterprises relying on older, legacy systems are particularly affected.

Auditing

Every activation, on the record

Activations and deactivations are tracked in comprehensive logs of entitlement activity, so reliable auditing is built in rather than bolted on — and customers can self-audit what they own at any time.

Comprehensive activity logs

Every activation and deactivation is recorded — who did it, when, and what changed — in comprehensive logs of entitlement activity.

Customer self-audit

Customers see exactly what they own, where it is activated, and how it is being used — no support ticket required.

Built in, not bolted on

A full history sits against each account, so reliable auditing comes with class-leading entitlement management by default.

Activation that gets out of the way

Online, offline, or behind an air gap — give every customer instant, reliable access to what they bought. See how Nalpeiron handles activation across every deployment.
